Minting by rolling was introduced in the sixteenth century. Consisting in sliding a metal sheet between two cylindrical dies synchronized so that the obverse and reverse designs of the coin coincide, then coins are trimmed. In the seventeenth century an innovation of the press was introduced, including cord-engraving on the edge of the coin, to prevent pieces of gold and silver from filing.
